The onion poultice is a folk remedy that has been used for hundreds of years. It helps to bring blood to the affected area. It is typically used for ear pain. It is said that it helps to decrease the pressure on the ear drum by stimulating the eustachian tube to drain.
Now, while I would recommend seeing your doctor for ear pain, sometimes that is not an option. NEVER put anything IN YOUR EAR without a doctor telling you to do so, after they have looked in your ear, as you could have a hole in your ear drum that would allow agents to access deep into your ear and could cause permanent damage.
That being said, this is an external topical application that may help while you are waiting to get to the doctor's office.
Directions:
Cut onion in half, add a few drops of water to the surface
Microwave 20-30 seconds or heat onion in oven
Test on your wrist skin first, before putting on child to make sure it doesn't burn
Turn their head with affected ear up
Place onion on the affected ear and cover with a towel
Rehear the onion when it cools down
Repeat 3 times in a row
Continue applications with new halves of onions throughout the day until ear feels better
